Several Marlborough homes are becoming warmer and healthier, thanks to an insulation makeover.
Already 30 of a total of 200 homes have been properly insulated, part of the Healthy Homes Marlborough project, from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.
Jennie Latter of Energy Options is co-ordinating the Marlborough section of the project.
Mrs Latter said that houses built before 1977 were not required to have any insulation.
Even in those homes that were insulated, the material used is now so old that it was completely ineffective, she said.
The project is supported by a range of local groups, including the Marlborough District Council, Electric Power Trust, Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and Work and Income. |
Mrs Latter said the parties had all spotted both the energy efficiency and health benefits that would come from the project.
"All over the country probably the quickest to get on board have been the regional health boards."
Production manager Tai Wills said people were noticing an increase in the warmth of their homes straight away.
She said often people had become used to living in cold houses, or could not afford to upgrade their insulation.
"It's quite rewarding when you see the difference it's making to people's lives."
Yesterday it was the turn of a Muller Rd house to become properly insulated.
Home owners pay 10 percent of the total cost of the insulating work, while landlords pay 60 percent. |
The insulation product used by Energy Options is Novatherm Polyester, which lies like a giant layer of marshmallow over existing insulation.
It is made from a fibre which does not include glues, dyes, fire catalysts or insecticides, and can be installed in a matter of hours.
"It's basically like a big duvet inner," said Mrs Wills.
Ms Latter said the company was also keen to get involved in the commercial market, insulating new properties as they were built.
Building Issues Minister Clayton Cosgrove yesterday announced a new package aimed at improving the energy efficiency of New Zealand homes and commercial buildings through insulation, solar, lighting and other technologies.
